So - you had to be careful in interpreting the results, and know that if the queue ever reached the second set, then the capacity of the second set was modelled all wrong.

Drivers coming across the side road at the second set would be able to drive through that queue as if it wasn't there.
MINI MOTORWAYS ROUNDABOUT VS TRAFFIC LIGHT SOFTWARE
To be fair, if you know how the design software for traffic signals works, then you'll know that it's all too easy to make the common error of assuming that drivers can drive through a queue that's backed up across the road in front of them.įor the non-designers, what that means is that older versions of the software modelling two crossroads might have a queue on the main road from the first set that came back through the second set. So, again, you don't know what you're talking about.ĮTA I'm a high speed road design engineer - never done anything in a residential area, all my stuff is Trunk Road/Motorway.
MINI MOTORWAYS ROUNDABOUT VS TRAFFIC LIGHT DRIVER
So stop spouting toss, you haven't got a clue.Īnd as for the driver jibe, well, the last 2 years I've probably driven 10,000 miles socially, been to the Nurburging, all over France, Amsterdam, all on road trips. And I've had MOP's stop on site and tell me it's made a difference. And all of this was with Police/LA approval. In fact, it's so succesful, there are now plans to signalise the "other" junction, the one on the other side of the carriageway. I was only reading the journey time survey yesterday. And since they've gone in, peak-time journey times have fallen on that stretch - in all directions, on each approach. I am also convinced that highway design engineers aren't drivers, just muppets witha a computer and some softwareAbsolute bulls t.Īnd I've recently (last 6 months) put traffic lights on a roundabout, a major one, off one of our countries busiest motorways.īecause MOP's complained constantly (I saw 12 HA requests in 1 month) about the traffic queueing up from the top of the slip (the roundabout) down on to lane 1, creating huge congestion. Sorry folks rant over and dummy back in mouth! I really don't see any benefit in this system. Just as annoying is when I come up to a roundabout at 6 in the morning and there is no other car in sight and I have to wait for 3 or more sets of lights in order to get round. I have seen so many accidents which have been caused by people being genuinely confused by the whole system. People are stopping at a red light and are accidentally pulling of when the next set of lights ahead of them turns green. Lights often change to green and back to red and no cars have moved. Standing traffic on the roundabout just obstructs cars from getting on and off and I have seen numerous road rage incidents from people blocking the road. There are a couple of roundabouts near to me which have always been busy but since the lights have been put on them they are much worse. Can anyone shine some light on the new craze of putting up to 5 sets of traffic lights actually on a roundabout so that the traffic grinds to a halt and the roundabout ceases to function.
